HEALTH AND WELLNESS
In 1992, NECTOI launched a health and wellness project to mitigate the impact of HIV and AIDS and Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) on all transport sub-sectors, namely Passenger-Carrying, Metered Taxi and Car Hire, and the Freight/Haulage sub-sectors. The transport sector workforce is particularly vulnerable to HIV owing to the significant amount of time spent away from family.
Over the years, the project has partnered with a number of organisations including World Vision, National AIDS Council (NAC), Zimbabwe AIDS Prevention and Support Organisation (ZAPSO), Zimbabwe National Council for the Welfare of Children, Zimbabwe Association for Crime Prevention and Rehabilitation of the Offender (ZACRO),Voluntary Services Overseas(VSO) and Progressio in its quest to achieve zero new HIV infections as well as zero stigma and discrimination against those infected within the transport industry.
NECTOI’s programme areas include the following:
1. Awareness sessions
2. Peer Education Training
3. Conducting outreach to truck stops and boarder posts
4. Management sensitizations
5. Research and documentation
